Melba, Nellie

Dame Nellie Melba(1861-1931)(original name: Helen Porter Michell), Australian soprano, studied in Melbourne and then in Paris with Marchesi, debut in Brussels as Gilda in 1887, then sang in most of the opera houses of the world. She toured with her own opera company in 1902 and 1911; from 1915 she taught at the Melbourne Conservatory. Her voice was agile and brilliant, but also rich and powerful.
